Fitzroy Crossing is a village of 1,300 people, mostly Aborigines, and will certainly serve as a stopover on your way from Broome to Kununurra, gateway to Purnululu (Bungle Bungle). From here, you can access Geikie Gorge (20km), Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge (113km and 150km respectively, 4x4 required). Fitzroy Crossing was the site of the first settlers to arrive in the Kimberley. It was a difficult time for the Aborigines, as evidenced by the Baobab Prison Tree, which in the 19th century served as a prison for Aborigines captured by the settlers and brought to Derby to work as bead fishermen.
