FLINDERS CHASE NATIONAL PARK
Superb park on Kangaroo Island, home to exceptional natural sites and historic monuments such as the lighthouses at Caps Borda and Couedic
Located to the west of Kangaroo Island, this park is home to spectacular rock formations and exceptional wildlife. Remarkable Rocks, a series of granite boulders sculpted by erosion, dominate the ocean, while Admirals Arch, an arch shaped by the elements, is home to a colony of fur seals. The Cape du Couedic lighthouse, built between 1906 and 1909, stands on the south-western coast, accessible via a path offering breathtaking views. Its stones were quarried on site and each block hand-cut. Further north, the Cape Borda lighthouse, erected in 1858, offers self-guided tours that give an insight into the isolated living conditions of the first lighthouse keepers.
The Flinders Chase Visitor Centre in Rocky River is the starting point for several hikes. A 1 km loop leads through acacia forests, while a 1.5 km trail traces the history of the park and its early inhabitants. A 4.5 km walk leads to waterholes where platypus, introduced here in the early 20th century, can be seen. The park is also home to koalas, which have become emblematic of the region. Echidnas can sometimes be seen foraging for insects.
The visitor center manages entrance fees, a café, campsites and accommodation. There are four campsites throughout the park, and it's possible to stay in former lighthouse keepers' houses or historic cottages.
