Enigmatic monolith, the sacred mountain of Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) sits in the middle of the Australian continent, 440 km southwest of Alice Springs. This big red rock, which turns carmine and purple at sunset, is more than 9 km in circumference and 348 m high, yes, that's more than the Eiffel Tower. It is about 6 million years old, and welcomes each year more than 450 000 visitors. Like an iceberg, only one tenth of its mass emerges. Before being a magnificent tourist attraction, Uluru is a sacred site for the Aborigines of the region, the Anangu.
