The small town of Quilpie is also known as Opal Town. This is where boulder opal is mined in the open pit. The first visit to plan? St Finbarr's Church in BulnBuln Street to admire the altar adorned with precious opals: an unusual place of worship! A peaceful town, it is pleasant to swim and picnic at Houdraman Lake. You can also fish on the Bulloo River, discover the wild flora of the surrounding countryside or climb to the Baldy Top lookout to watch the sunset. Beware of the summer heat where temperatures can rise to 47°C!
