Roma is considered one of the gateways to the outback and the capital of the Western Downs. The city marks the boundary between the agricultural plains of the Darling Downs to the east and the mulga region to the west. With its raw landscapes and wildlife, the town was established in 1862 to provide the emerging agricultural region with an administrative center. But it wasn't until the early 19th century, with the arrival of the railroad and the discovery of gas and oil, that the town really took off. Nearby Carnarvon Gorge National Park offers off-the-beaten-path hiking and well-established routes are accessible by 4WD.
