Winton is the birthplace of Australia's most famous folk song: the ballad Waltzing Matilda composed by the poet Banjo Paterson. The small town of 1,600 people has paid tribute to one of Australia's greatest poets by dedicating the Waltzing Matilda Centre to him. The town is also the starting point for the Lark Quarry Dinosaur Footprints: more than 95 million years old, these 3,300 footprints immortalized in stone are considered to be the world's only known site of a dinosaur stampede. Finally, don't forget to visit Queensland's oldest opal fields.
