Mount Isa is like an oasis in the outback, overlooked by the majestic Selwyn Ranges. The industrial and commercial capital of northwest Queensland, Mount Isa owes its existence to the silver, lead, copper and zinc deposits discovered in 1923 by John Campbell Miles. Today, the mine is the lifeblood of the town and one of the largest silver mines in Australia. The town is home to over 50 nationalities, miners and engineers. Start your visit by going to the Look-Out on Hilary Street, which offers a panoramic view of the city. Australia's largest rodeo is held in Mount Isa on the2nd weekend of August
