Originally established as an export port for the beef industry, the town of Normanton grew primarily as a result of the fallout from the discovery of gold deposits in Croydon in 1885. Today, the town has retained all its charm, with old buildings dating back to 1870: a special atmosphere hangs over the town, inviting you to take a stroll back in time. The railway station is a superb example of Victorian architecture. The town survives on tourism and commercial fishing based in nearby Karumba. The surrounding marshes and network of streams attract numerous birds, including brolgas and sarus crane.
