Halfway between Sydney and Melbourne and three hours from Canberra, Merimbula is a pretty seaside town with markets and festivals throughout the year. Summers are warm and winters mild. Here you can surf, dive, watch whales on their annual migration (May-November) or fish all year round. From Merimbula, there is easy access to several national parks with pockets of ancient rainforest, spectacular waterfalls and abundant wildlife. According to conflicting sources, the town's name means "big snake" or "place of two lakes".
