BEACHES
Pleasant beaches of Iraklia including those of Aghios Georgios for snorkeling, Livadi and Vorini Spilia.
The small beach of Aghios Georgios is very pleasant and frequented by locals and families. Huge tamarisk trees provide welcome shade on the sandy beach. The water, turquoise and sometimes emerald, is absolutely transparent and is only very rarely disturbed by the arrival of a boat. This natural harbour is very deep, which creates the conditions for beautiful snorkelling sessions
To the south, Livadi beach (15 minutes on foot, 5 minutes by bus) is a sumptuous expanse of sand with shallow waters and simply stunning clarity. The pretty bay of Livadi opens onto the uninhabited islet of Venetiko. Tamarisk trees line the beach and provide shade. Wild camping is permitted at both ends, while two tavernas offer food and drink.
To the north, the wild beach of Vorini Spilia is accessible by a path at the exit of the port (20 minutes on foot). The waters here are also incredibly clear and it is perhaps the most beautiful beach in Iraklia. But it is also more exposed to the wind and unfortunately receives the waste sent back from the sea. The locals regularly take care of cleaning it but you may encounter some rubbish at the beginning of the season in particular
The beaches of the south coast Merichas and Ammoudi are dominated by imposing cliffs where two pairs of griffon vultures (the griffon in mythology) and a pair of Bonelli's eagles, a very rare species of birds of prey, nest. They are only accessible by boat.
