Monastery on top of a hill near the ruins of a Venetian castle and a cave.
Panaghia Kalamiotissa is located on the top of a 450 m hill. Built on the site of a temple of Apollo, the monastery was founded when an icon of the Virgin was found on a reed (kalami). Nearby you can see the ruins of a Venetian castle and at the base of the hill you can visit the Drakondospilio, a cave with stalactites. Beware! You have to go to the old monastery (Pano Monastiri), not to the new one, which is much further away.

The former monastery, Pano Monastiri, are at the top of Kalamos (475m), the second largest monolithic rock of the Mediterranean after Gibraltar.
Anticipate 1:30 ascension by a magnificent, rocky and sometimes vertiginous way, but the 360 ° view is fabulous and is worth the effort, especially with the sunrise or if you spend the night under the Milky Way as several do it.
