The Monastery of the Virgin of Olympus (Ιερά Μονή Παναγίας Ολυμπιώτισσας/Iera Moni Panagias Olympiotissas) is located on a hill near Elassona (population 10,000) and southwest of Mount Olympus. Founded around 1395 by Byzantine princes from Thessaly and now occupied by nuns, it boasts a superb church preserving its original frescoes (beautiful portrait of Emperor Andronic II Palaeologus) and a small natural history museum.
