It is the second oldest festival in Greece after the one in Epidaurus, with performances in its ancient theatre.
It is one of the major cultural events of the city and one of the oldest in Greece. The first performance of the Festival was Electra of Euripides in September 1957, making it the second oldest festival in Greece, after that of Epidauros. It takes place from July to August, mainly in the ancient theatre of Philippi, which makes it unique and beautiful. But many events also take place in the city and in the fortress of Kavala. The programming mixes ancient and contemporary, tragedies and comedies.
