Macedonian tombs in the city of Lefkadia.
After Kopanos, the tomb of the Last Judgment is the first to be indicated. It is the largest Macedonian tomb known to archaeologists today. Doric columns decorate the facade surmounted by painted metopes. Its two-storey façade combines the two orders of ionic and doric: a doric frieze at the top with metopes and triglyphs, and an ionic frieze. Both depict scenes of fighting between the Centaurs and the Lapiths and between the Persians and the Greeks. The frescoes of the 4th century BC are of impressive finesse! The deceased is an unnamed member of the military. Was it Alexander's general? The tomb was looted in antiquity and does not provide sufficient evidence to identify it.
Continuing the same small path, you may be able to access the tomb at Les Palmettes. It owes its name to the colourful palmettes that adorn its pediment, also bearing a very beautiful painting depicting Persephone and Pluto. It is a two-bedroom tomb with traces of painted decoration. But on our last visit, the tomb was closed for restoration.
If you come back on the road to Edessa, the next one on your left is the tomb of Lyson and Kallikles, more recent since it dates back to 200 BC. She's still partially buried. The family's ashes were kept in niches dug in the walls of the tomb. The paintings on the inside show that it must have been an important aristocratic family of soldiers.
