A cylindrical keep was built to protect the village and the neighboring towns from attacks.

In 1212, when the fief of Montpeyroux was attached to the county of Auvergne following a gift from Philippe-Auguste, a cylindrical keep was built in order to protect the village and the neighboring villages from attacks. From the top of its 33 m, this tower was the strong point of the fortress. An inseparable element of the village which is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, inhabitants and visitors have the chance to access it to enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view.

Ce donjon médiéval de Montpeyroux a été pour nous une agréable surprise. C'est une belle restauration avec un accès au premier niveau particulièrement original, avec dans un premier temps un bel escalier en bois, puis une échelle...
Quelques vieux outils agricoles et de vieilles photos commentées sont exposés au premier niveau. Il faut absolument monter tout en haut du donjon, pour profiter d'une vue à 360°... juste magnifique.
Nous y avons passé un très agréable moment, et l'accueil est très sympathique.
C'est une visite à faire si vous passez par Montpeyroux, d'autant plus que le prix est très raisonnable.
