VIKOS THROATS

The famous Vikos Canyon is a vertiginous natural fault, more than 1,000 metres deep, which tears through the mountainside serving as the bed of the Voidomatis River. These magnificent gorges, quite exceptional by their dimensions, are to be contemplated from several points of view in height or to traverse if one is more sporting. It is better to leave Monodendri to make this excursion. But you can also make many hikes in this area if you prefer easier ...

These gorges that meander for nearly 30 km can lead to unforgettable trekking. Proudly, a sign reminds the distracted that this was the deepest canyon in the world in 1997: 900 m deep... The gorges run along the Voidomatis River, which is however often dry in summer. The site of Vikos is rich in flora and fauna, there are 110 different species of birds, rare butterflies, amphibians and snakes, open your eyes! Nowadays, the gorges allow to reach several charming villages like Vikos, Aristi, Macro Papingo, Kipi after a physical itinerary. The path is signposted from the central square of Monodendri. The path descends for about 40 minutes to a fork in the road. Turning right, you reach Kipi (1 hour), and turning left, you head towards Vikos (4:30 am), Aristi or Mikro Papingo (7 am). Remember to take water and wear good shoes... We can never say it enough!
