TEMPLE OF ZEUS OR SACRED HOUSE "HIERA OIKIA"
Temple located in Dodoni, having known three periods.
The temple, in its construction and in its attendance, has known three periods. The first period dates from the beginning of the 4th century BC. At that time, the oracle was consulted by means of cauldrons. The priests interpreted the rustle of the oak leaves and the sounds of cauldrons. A blow applied to one of these utensils caused very long vibrations that were transmitted. To stop them, you had to lay your hand on a cauldron.
The second period dates from the middle of the 4th century. At that time, a small wall was built on the cauldrons' site, which surrounded the oak tree. The entrance to the compound was to the south. The noise of the cauldrons was then replaced by that of an astragalus whip held by a bronze statue of a child hitting a bronze cauldron placed on a column
The third period dates from the 3rd century. The small wall was replaced by a real wall, whose three sides opposite the oak were made of real porticoes. An opistodome, or temple, and a vestibule were also built. This time, the oracle's answers were obtained by interpreting again the sound of cauldrons, the rustle of oak leaves and the flight of pigeons over the oak. The oak was burned during an Etolian attack in 219 B.C. Indignant, the Macedonians and Epirote went on revenge in 218 B.C., burning down the palace and the city of Thermos.
