MEGA SPILEON MONASTERY

The visit of the monastery of Mega Spileon will make you discover objects of the XVIIth century among which crowns, mitres, chasubles...
How can we not be surprised by this monument, which hangs on the crevice of a high rock 1,000 m high and stands on eight floors like an old fortress? The monastery is indeed worth a visit. It was founded in 362 AD and seems to have withstood everything. Burned down by the Germans in 1943, it was rebuilt, but the traces of the disaster seem to be anchored in the rocks supporting it. The monks who inhabit it are unusual figures, they leave the visitor with an unusual memory. Their long hair, their thick beard and their long dress remind us that these places are steeped in asceticism.
Visit. At the entrance to the monastery, we can already see an icon of Saint Luke, in wax and putty, representing the Virgin holding the Child Jesus. The entrance to the museum is located at the very end of the main corridor. 17th century objects are on display, including crowns, bolsters, chasubles, 17th and 18th century gospel books in the left window and sacred crosses in the next window. Note the precision of the miniatures of which these crosses are made. Finally, at the back of the museum's small room, a 17th century iconostasis engraved on wood comes from the Ionian Islands. As you leave the museum and turn right, you can normally also admire, in a cave, the reconstruction of a scene: probably that of the shepherdess who discovered the icon representing the Virgin.
