ELEUSIS SITE MUSEUM
Museum housing the last vestiges of the site of Eleusis from the prehistoric period to the Roman period.
In the garden that leads to the museum, one can see a Roman sarcophagus decorated with a scene of Calydon's boar hunt on one side, griffins on the other, and a scaled sphinx on top.
One enters the museum through room 2, in which is the headless statue of Demeter.
In room 1, located on the right, one can see the famous "amphora of Eleusis", decorated with a representation of Odysseus and the Cyclops. On the right, Demeter is sitting and is as tall as her daughter Kore. We also see a piglet for the sacrifices, but above all, the masterpiece of Eleusis, the Korê in flight, which represents a small nymph going to the ocean. It decorated the pediment of the Sacred House that we will see after visiting the museum. The drapery is of a rare finesse.
In room 3, which can be reached by crossing room 2 again, a statuette of Poseidon, on the left.
In room 4 , a very beautiful statue of Antinous, Hadrian's favorite.
In room 5, the two models of the site will enlighten you enormously on the visit that you have just made. One can also see there a very imposing bust of caryatids, these statues-columns.
In room 6, finally, potteries of the ancient cemetery of Eleusis, from the prehistoric time to the Roman time.
On leaving the museum , one can go down leaving the enclosure of the sanctuary by the right, in order to admire the last vestiges of the site.
