The most interesting monument of the site of Athens having preserved its state and its original characteristics.
Climbing up towards the entrance to the Acropolis site, you find yourself at the top of Herod Atticus' odeon. This monument, probably completed around AD 161, has the characteristics of a Roman odeon, with the columns at the back framing niches and statues. Its state of preservation makes it one of the most interesting monuments on the site, a theatre for cultural events. Herod Atticus, a native of Marathon and heir to a large fortune, spent a great deal of money on the construction of several public buildings throughout Greece.
