Housed in a superb Secession-style palace, the museum comprises several collections of some 460,000 objects found in Croatia. From prehistory to ancient civilizations and the Middle Ages. Each department bears witness to everyday life and art history, with a numismatic collection and works by contemporary artists inspired by archaeology. At present, however, only the second floor, hall and rear courtyard are open to visitors, due to major restoration work.
