ABBEY

A superb abbey on the site of one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Auvergne, in the heart of the village of Menat.
Discreet on the outside, the abbey was built in the 12th century on the site of one of the oldest Benedictine monasteries in Auvergne. In the 13th century, the abbey was renovated and reformed by Ménelée, its patron saint, and then attached to the Abbey of Cluny. Its Romanesque church was later fortified. The transept crossing and part of the three naves remain from the Romanesque period. Beautiful capitals reveal a Limousin influence. The cloister gallery is predominantly Gothic. Work to link the gardens to the cloisters has enhanced the site.
