CASTLE OF MAUZUN

With its 900 m of walls, this castle is the largest of the medieval fortifications in Lower Auvergne. A first castle from the 10th century was rebuilt in the 12th century and passed by donation to the bishopric of Clermont. Despite its power Mauzun fell to the English during the Hundred Years' War, then to the Huguenots and then to the Catholic league. The castle after a new restoration in the 17th century and a new siege in 1632, which ended in failure, was nevertheless partially demolished under Louis XIII at Massillon's request. Only a few pieces will be kept as a prison.... for the priests of the diocese! The fortress was listed as a Historic Monument in 1970, it is true that its ruins still looked good with their powerful curtains, the many towers still standing, all built in basalt. In 2000, Mauzun was bought by the Charrier family, which was not at its first attempt - restoration of the Château de Saint-Saturnin in particular -, Mauzun once again came out of oblivion.
