FORÊT D'IKALALAO
Go there and contact
The Ikalalao forest is located just 20 minutes by tuc-tuc north of the city center, and is a low-altitude tropical rainforest ecosystem typical of Madagascar's east coast. Its geographical location is characterized by a varied topography ranging from coastal lowlands to inland hills on a mainly volcanic geological substrate. The proximity of the Indian Ocean provides the region with a humid climate and abundant rainfall, essential factors in maintaining this dense, stratified forest formation. From a scientific point of view, the Ikalalao forest is distinguished by its rich plant biodiversity, probably including endemic species and tree families characteristic of Madagascan rainforests, as well as palms and epiphytes. In particular, there are several types of orchid on site, some of them endemic. Among the trees you won't want to miss are the traveller's trees, in great numbers, mango trees, lychees... which will delight you if you're in the right season! The Ikalalao forest is also a vital habitat for a diverse range of fauna, including a rich endemic avifauna, reptiles, amphibians and a wide variety of insects. However, as elsewhere in Madagascar, this precious ecosystem is potentially threatened by deforestation, habitat fragmentation and the introduction of invasive species. Protecting the Ikalalao forest must be a priority!
