ILE AUX FORBANS

Since the early ^18th century, the existence and preservation of the name "Île aux Forbans" has been a testimony to the memory of the pirate presence on Sainte-Marie. Many local legends circulate around this islet. Records show that pirate dwellings were located here, and that, according to witnesses, cannons were placed here. Pirates also made lime to repair ships. A well and a pier date from this period. Later, when Sainte-Marie became a penal colony, many convicts worked here.
