42 km from Manakara, Vohipeno, the ancient Antemoro capital, is a site with a historic past. The Muslim influence which gave birth to the Antemoro culture arrived here, six centuries ago, before spreading to the whole region. It is always perceptible there. Islam is alive and well here: 70 to 80% of the population is Muslim. On warm afternoons, in certain districts, one can hear the recitation of suras. But the Antemoro identity is there, djellaba, turban and fez highlighting faces mixed with Africa, Arabia and a touch of Asia. Numerous bush cabs between Manakara and Farafangana, passing through Vohipeno.
