Located some 54 km south-east of the Gambier archipelago, to which it is administratively attached, Temoe is the most easterly atoll of the archipelago, and more widely of all French Polynesia. Trapezoidal in shape, it is 6.8 km long and 4.2 km wide, with a land area of 2.1 km2. Its lagoon, devoid of a pass, is surrounded by about twenty motus. Temoe is said to have been discovered in 1797 by the British navigator James Wilson; inhabited until 1838, its inhabitants were then deported to Mangareva for the evangelization work of Father Honoré Laval. An old Marquisian-style marae still survives there, but there is little chance that you will have the opportunity to go and discover it?
