Akamaru, a small island 3 km long located 9 km from Mangareva, is the first island that Father Honoré Laval set foot on in 1834. In 1841, he had the beautiful Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix church built there. Mangarevians sometimes come to maintain it to avoid its dilapidation. If you visit the island, you will disembark at Tai o 'Areragi on a small stone jetty designed at the time of the missionaries, and take a majestic grassy path to the village and the church. On your way, don't miss the Wailing Stone to the north, the Areragi Bread Oven, or the Porotutu Cave at the back of the old village. Today, Akamaru is inhabited by two families.
