80 km south of Safaga, el-Quseir is only 160 km from the Nile. Its location can be appreciated for combining culture and idleness. In Pharaonic times, this small town was one of the great ports of the Red Sea. Goods from Arabia, India and East Africa were all unloaded here. Hatshepsut used to send his ships there, which returned loaded with incense and ivory. Later, El Quseir was the place of embarkation for the pilgrims of Mecca. It ceased all imports when the Suez Canal opened. Ships no longer stopped there. Tourism, for the time being, has not yet disrupted it too much.
