Ancient city of Canope, not far from Aboukir, where the Ptolemies erected at least two temples.
The site commemorates Bonaparte's three battles in the Bay of Aboukir. On August1 , 1798, against Admiral Nelson, the French fleet was defeated. A year later, on July 25, 1799, the French did it again, emerging victorious against the Turkish army. Finally, on March 8 1801, Abercromby defeated Bonaparte's fleet, which evacuated Egypt.
Not far from Aboukir was the ancient city of Canope, where the Ptolemies erected at least two temples. This Greek name was later given to the four vases in which the viscera of the pharaohs were kept.
