250 kilometres north of Luxor. The Coptic population of Asyut experienced a strong increase following an apparition of the Virgin Mary (recognized only by the Coptic Orthodox Church). It is therefore an unavoidable stage in the pilgrimage of the Copts in the footsteps of the Holy Family. It is also the largest city in Upper Egypt, with the third largest university in Egypt in terms of number of students. The pharaonic populations gave it the name of Siout, it was the capital before losing its title to Thebes in the New Empire. One of its greatest treasures is the necropolis of Asyut, located west of the city.
