Unfortunately, the site of Tell el-Amarna lacks the gentleness of its close neighbor, and your first impression of it is likely to be the right one: an immense, barren, inhospitable, windswept expanse of white sand. Leaving aside the two or three tombs that still preserve a few choice bas-reliefs, there's nothing left of Akhenaten, or anything that would interest a visitor not specialized in archaeology. Of all the tourist sites in Egypt, Tell el-Amarna seems to be one of the most difficult to recommend, both because of its location, inaccessibility and time commitment, and because of what it has to offer.
