5-star boutique hotel offering bungalows, luxurious suites with Jacuzzi and villas with contemporary furniture.
This 5-star hotel is undoubtedly one of the finest on the island. Zuri Zanzibar is a jewel of luxury, a boutique hotel for the happy few that features in the finest magazines. And with good reason: the 56 bungalows, suites and villas are adorned with contemporary furnishings combined with a mixed architecture of local materials and handcrafted decorative objects, giving the rooms a personal tone. The most luxurious suites have their own whirlpool bath. The site is set high up in a large coconut grove on a heavenly beach.

The Zuri Zanzibar merits a 10 for beauty and service and a 0 for noise control. To deal with the problem, first: if you are looking for a tranquil getaway, look elsewhere, because Zuri delivers merely the appearance of tranquility. A white whale of a hotel opened next door in the past year, breaking all the zoning laws for size and sound control. The 500-room behemoth next door, the Riu, is a hotel for the party crowd (think South Beach, Miami). The pounding bunga-bunga music starts at 7 in the evening and goes until midnight, and you can't get away from it. No sitting out on your porch after dinner listening to the wind in the trees, no quiet moonlit walks along the beach. The pounding music is ubiquitous and inescapable. To make matters worse, the Riu requires a massive generator that sounds like a helicopter or airliner is forever hovering over the Zuri, it's that bad. If you check out of the hotel for a quieter hotel before the end of your stay, as we did, you will not be refunded your pre-paid-in-full advance. The management graciously offered to upgrade us to a bunker of a villa, made of concrete, where one could ostensibly get away from the noise, but in order to do that you would be trapped inside all evening. The Zuri is well aware of the problem they have, but insist there is little they can do in the face of government corruption, which endorsed the Riu. On the plus side, the Zuri is gorgeous, a tropical paradise designed within an inch of its life. The food, with qualifications, is superb (the poolside restaurant is top-notch, the buffet dinner restaurant has more than ample choice but the quality is just so-so), the staff is enchanting. The Indian Ocean waters are aquamarine-blue perfection, and at the semi-private beach reserved for villas and suites. Our jacuzzi suite was spacious and beautiful, with a sprawling porch that, ultimately, thanks to the noise, was unusable in the evenings.

This hotel is an absolute paradise, the best hotel in Zanzibar. Everything fits together. The hotel has its own Spice farm, an amazing pool, its own beach. There are several restaurants and the cuisine is excellent. Simply perfect. Definitely recommend it, it's worth it.
