With 4,000 runners and 40 nationalities represented, this race is Tanzania's biggest sporting event of any kind. At the foot of the highest point on the African continent (5,895 metres), runners are in for a real treat. After the clouds have cleared, they are treated to a breathtaking view of the Kili ice cap. Despite the start times (6.30 a.m. for the marathon, 7 a.m. for the half-marathon), the participants can't escape the heat. War raged between the Kenyans, Ethiopians and Tanzanians for first place.
