Umm al-Jimal, "the mother of camels", is an ancient caravan city located at the foot of the Jebel Druze (also called Jebel Hauran), 10 km from the Syrian border and 20 km from the commercial city of Mafraq. The site is particularly well preserved but does not really have any spectacular monuments and few tourists bother to come here. Nevertheless, walking through these black basalt ruins, with their timeless atmosphere, can be a pleasant experience (provided that it is not too hot). It is best to visit the site in the morning, or in the late afternoon to take advantage of the beautiful light and bearable heat in summer.
