Built on the location of the Roman Castellum Tingitanum, in a fertile region irrigated by the Fodda Oued, Chlef has changed the name several times, perhaps to remove the bad eye, but it is still often called Orléansville. Yet memories remain of two terrible earthquakes that ravaged Orléansville on 9 September 1954 (1 500 dead) and then El-Asnam on 10 October 1980.Today, the city has been completely rebuilt and has its role as a regional economic capital, mainly through agriculture (citrus fruits, cereals, sugar beets, etc.).
