Khemisti is a small fishing village founded by Sicilian from Cefalu that they called Chiffalo. This small village was known for its many sardines and anchovies. The small houses of fishermen, of colonial architecture, let imagine the charm of the village of yesteryear. At the end of the village, on the seafront, you can see the old hangar of the famous "Papa Falcon" cannery, one of the first sardine canning plants. The name of Khemisti was given to the village of Independence in tribute to Mohamed Khemisti, the Prime minister of Algerian foreign affairs, murdered in 1963. In the countryside you can see old large farms or hangars, whose palms or bougainvillea mark the huge entrance. The main streets of the ancient colonial towns and villages are lined with ficus or high planes.
