Inaugurated in 1918, it is the largest and most beautiful synagogue in Africa. It was transformed into a mosque and bears the name of Abdullah Ibn Salam Ibn Al-Harith (a rabbi converted to Islam who was one of the companions of the prophet Mohammed).
This former synagogue is located in front of the former Jewish quarter, the Derb district, which is quite dismal today.
The city of Oran was one of the strongest Jewish communities in Algeria. Until 1962, it had a temple, ten synagogues, two religious schools and a cemetery until 1962.
