Because of its proximity to mainland China, from which it is only a few kilometres away, Kinmen was like Mazu placed under martial law and became a nationalist outpost against communist China. The archipelago consists of 12 islands occupying an area of 13,425 ha. Although Kinmen is 227 km from the Taiwanese coast, it is closely linked to the history of Taiwan. In the charming village of Ouchuo, about thirty Ming style houses, some of which are still inhabited, give a good idea of what Formosa might have looked like 40 years ago. Kinmen is also famous for its sorghum alcohol, Kaoliang.
