BASILISK OF THE IMMACULATE DESIGN

For the small village of Wanchin, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is a source of pride. Built in 1870, it is the oldest church in Taiwan. Fernando Sains, a Spanish Catholic missionary, is the one who initiated the project. He was committed to the community and evangelized the villagers. The sober facade of the building is marked with the emperor's seal, a sign of the open-mindedness of the Chinese emperors towards other cultures and religions.
