Shushan or the Mount of Longevity overlooks the city. Covered with forests, it is an ideal refuge for squirrels and birds. Several hiking trails through the forest offer a beautiful view of the coastline. On the eastern side of the hill, Yuanheng Temple, built in 1679, is the guardian of three large representations of the golden Buddha. At the highest point of Shushan (355 m), stands the Mausoleum of the Martyrs. To the south-east of the hill, Kaohsiung Zoo, less impressive than the one in Taipei, has 100 rare species of animals.

Pretty forest, beware of the monkeys when you walk (not to take food). Nice view of the city from the temple. Pretty village after the university or is much restaurant with terrace overlooking the sea.
