This beautiful, colourful and lively temple dedicated to Mazu contrasts with the peaceful temple of Longshan and raises a historical controversy. It seems that the statue of the protective deity of the fishermen was taken to Lukang in 1684 by General Shih to celebrate the absorption of Taiwan into the Chinese Qing Empire. It would then come from the original mausoleum on Meizhou Island (Fujian Province of China) and would be the first place of worship dedicated to Mazu on the island. The area around the temple is full of small restaurants and comes alive at the end of the day.
