Impressive modern Benedictine abbey in Cournols, with one of the buildings on the site offering full board for men.
The impressive modern building seen perched on the road to Saint-Saturnin is none other than a Benedictine abbey. Built in the 1970s in a sober, minimalist style, the monastery is home to monks from Fontgombault. The priory became an abbey in March 1981. Today, some forty monks live here and follow the rule of St. Benedict, based on prayer and work, Ora et Obra. Prayer alternates between private times and community services. A special feature of Randol is that during services, the monks stand between the altar and the Blessed Sacrament, acting as guardians. The work is as much manual - allowing the monks to do penance while earning enough to support the monastery - as it is intellectual. The study of divine things, the Lecto Divina, enables us to know in order to love, and to become accustomed to contemplating the invisible. Walking is permitted, but the quiet of the place must be respected.
Some people come here for retreats. Gentlemen and young men are welcomed at the abbey itself, in a building close to the church. Guests are welcomed on a full-board basis. Families and single ladies are welcomed in the hamlet located 500 meters from the abbey. The accommodation, which varies in size, is equipped for sleeping and cooking, but guests bring their own food. For sheets and household linen, please contact the Father in charge.
