Surin is the capital of the eponymous prefecture, located about 450 kilometers northeast of Bangkok, not far from the border with Cambodia, on one of the confluences of the Mekong River. It has a population of about 39,000. The climate is tropical, hot and humid most of the year. The city is famous for its annual festival dedicated to elephants.
