A small town of 20,000 inhabitants, "The City of Three Mists" has retained a certain charm. Surrounded by mountains and forests, Mae Hong Son has remained very provincial. The proximity of the Burmese border, 50 km away, made it a hub for opium trafficking. The population is mostly composed of Shans of Burmese origin but now Thai: "Shan" is in fact the Burmese deformation of the word "Siam". There are also Karen, Lisu, Lahu, Hmong, Padong... If the touristy atmosphere of Pai bothers you, you are in the right place. The region has several high mountains and enjoys a pleasant climate almost all year round.
