Rio was born in the 1960s. History has remembered the charismatic founder of this cinema, Nick Kechichian. His real first name was Antranig, a tailor of Armenian origin, he had a house built at 178 rue Sous-les-Vignes, which became Le Rio. It is a modest cinema where the great classics of auteur cinema are shown. Rio is still fighting for a different and authentic cinema, whose sole objective is not only profitability but also culture. The Capitole's programming appeals to moviegoers because it is one of the few to offer films in their original version as well as films d'auteurs. The Capitol became the Capitol in 1966, and in 1972 a new exterior look was given to the theatre, which was doubled in size. Four years later, the purchase followed the obtaining of the UGC label for the exploitation. Six theaters were created, a complete renovation was undertaken, and the booths were automated. A difficult period followed, before Pathé bought the cinema in 1992. Today, it is still the owner of the Capitole cinema.
