ADAM'S BRIDGE

In Christian beliefs, Adam's Bridge was destroyed by God when he drove Adam out of Paradise (Sri Lanka, in this case). Hindus believe that the bridge was built by Rama to reach the island of Lanka where his wife Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana. Geological evidence and some writings suggest that a real isthmus existed between the two countries, but that it was destroyed by a storm in the 15th century. Eighteen sandbanks are spread over the 30 kilometres that separate India and Sri Lanka.
