The Twin Basins date from the 4th and 6th centuries. They are twins in name only: one is one and a half times bigger than the other. The largest is 40 metres long and 15 metres wide and is 5.5 metres deep. These pools, used by the monks, were made of granite and the walls and bottom are entirely lined with stone. The stairs leading down to the water level are decorated with horns of plenty and friezes. In the small pool, water gushes from the mouth of a half-dragon, half-lion gargoyle called Makara.
