This imposing basin is 159 m long, 52 m wide and 9.5 m deep. It was fed by the Periyamkulama Tank and a network of underground pipes that supplied the 75,000m3 needed to fill the tank. The tank owes its name to its imposing proportions, as this water was probably intended for the 5,000 monks of the neighbouring Abhayagiri monastery, and not for the bathing of elephants.
