It is part of the Sri Lanka National Police, which currently comprises 43 territorial divisions, 67 functional divisions and 432 police stations, with a staff of over 84,000. The history of the police in Sri Lanka dates back to the time of the Dutch, who established the first police stations in Colombo. Since independence in 1948, the Sri Lankan police force has undergone numerous reforms and expanded its functions to include crime prevention and detection, road safety and the protection of women and children. Measures have also been taken to combat drug abuse and protect police informers. The Tissamaharama police force plays an essential role in maintaining order and security in the city.
